Spring Treats for Mother’s Day and Easter Ideas

We have a spring in our step at this time of year. When the evenings get lighter, the weather becomes milder and there’s a hint that winter will end soon. March and April are some of our favourite months with plenty of occasions for family and friends to come together.

For Mother’s Day, our 100% British Wool yarns are the ideal gift for avid knitters and fans of crochet. Our yarns come in a variety of weights including Lace, 3-ply, 4-ply, DK, 5-ply, Aran and Chunky.

The beautifully produced Blacker Yarn Kits  that we create here in Cornwall provide the ideal solution if you’re looking for a Mother’s Day gift with a difference.  Treat that special person to one of our project kits containing an easy-to-follow pattern and a quantity of our natural wool yarn, delivered in an environmentally friendly presentation box or canvas bag. With our knitting and crochet kits you can create a variety of unique and stylish knitwear items including shawls; pullovers and unisex jumpers; hats and socks; seasonal garlands and homeware such as a cosy hot water bottle cover.

The Kaori Jumper Project Kit includes a pattern designed by Walaa Emad. The Kaori is a slightly oversized jumper with a raglan construction, it has a boxy body with no shaping and colourwork for the majority of the body, the sleeves have a tapered look whilst having a loose fit. The pattern is named after Walla’s mum in Japanese, who loves lavender and was the inspiration behind the design.

Display your love and thanks to the special person in your life on Mother’s Day by making some crochet hearts using our Crochet Heart Garland Kit. The pattern has been designed by Rebecca Anaspure using 2 x 50g balls of Blacker Swan Pimpernel in 4ply. The kit also includes some stuffing, made from noils, clean waste fibre,  from our mill. There are many gift options with this kit. You can create the twelve stuffed hearts to form some bunting to hang in the house or make a pretty window display, produce a heart shaped gift basket, a scented heart to place in drawers or a closet, a pin cushion or a handy scissor case. What’s not to love with this handmade gift!

Socks are always a useful gift at any time of year and even more precious when handmade especially for you. When choosing sock yarn, we suggest using our 4-ply yarn and to reinforce the toes and heel to improve durability. Our Guernsey yarns work well for fine high-definition textured designs and Aran creates thicker sock versions which are longer lasting and can be worn with boots. Take a look at the Morwenstowe Socks, pattern created by Sonja Bargielowska and a companion piece to the Gwindra Shawl, making a delightful and practical knitted gift set. The sock pattern assumes that you are familiar with sock construction and designed with a princess sole. The foot and leg length are adjustable to suit.

Pattern books are popular with knitters and crocheters looking for inspiration for their next project, and especially for those who like to follow a pattern in a printed form rather than an online or downloaded version. We have two pattern books available: Pure Wool and Raw on our website.

Especially for Easter and new this year, we have worked again with designer, Rebecca Anaspure to create the adorable Easter Bunny Crochet Garland as part of a Project Kit. The kit includes a quantity of Jacob 4-ply and Blacker Swan 4-ply and a pattern to make twelve cute bunnies that you can sew together to create an eye-catching garland to hang in a child’s bedroom or display in any indoor space. We hope that the finished item brings an egg-stra smile at Easter time.
