A lovely slightly felted bulky tweed wool yarn! The fibre in or tweed Double Knitting yarn is very special: the base is from a Westcountry Mule sheep , so it is very soft and lustrous and all from Somerset or Devon, combined with a little Black Welsh Mountain wool, also from a small flock in Devon. These DK tweed wools are blended to a subtle heathered pale grey and either scoured together and then “dyed in the wool” before carding, or some are dyed after spinning into yarn for an even more subtle tweed effect. A scattering of multi-coloured neps (tiny balls of wool dyed in many colours) is added to the carded fibre just before spinning.
Our tweed yarn range comes in natural grey and seven heathered shades to reflect the moorland landscapes of the Westcountry. The coloured neps are selected for each shade, so the effect is very subtle, just showing an occasional glint amongst the heather!
