Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

This summer as we come together across the UK to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we have collaborated with Lizzie from Cornish brand, NeliHandmade to launch a very special lace shawl to mark this momentous occasion.

Lizzie has designed a simple yet stunning creation using our lightweight Blacker Yarns Lyonesse 4-ply yarn – the perfect accessory to wear to a street party or more formal evening celebration. The Platinum Jubilee Shawl pattern is included in a new kit that we have put together including five balls of Lyonesse, to mark the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne.

Lizzie has chosen Tourmaline, a subtle blush colour and says:

“When Kamila and Emma approached me to see if I would be interested in collaborating with them to produce a knitting kit for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee…. I jumped at the chance. What an honour to be asked to launch this for such an important event! I wanted to produce something that I thought could be enjoyed by a wide range of ages, on a variety of occasions, and something that the Queen might like herself. A shawl was the perfect choice.  Pink was a popular favourite for Blacker Yarns, and I love it too. It is a colour which has been worn by the Queen many times throughout her long reign. I really love this fashionable dusky pink which compliments many other colours and will add warmth when worn with casual pastels”.

Lyonesse was chosen as it is a fitting summer yarn for this delicate shawl and is made from a 50/50 blend of natural linen and soft white Falkland Island Corriedale/Merino wool which is worsted spun for a soft, smooth finish. The wool adds presence and memory to the yarn, while the linen contributes crispness and strength. The combination creates a light yarn with good stitch definition, which will retain its block wonderfully. Lyonesse is available in both Double Knitting and 4-ply in a range of breezy summer dyed shades plus two naturals, all named for precious stones.

If you are looking for some fun ways to celebrate this historic, national occasion our Feel the Love crochet heart bunting and Crochet Heart Project Kit will bring a regal air to any proceedings and will look striking hanging in a window for your neighbours, friends, family and passers-by to see or strewn across an outdoor space, if the weather is fine. To create a patriotic Union Jack themed visual impact use some of our red, white, and blue yarn such as Blacker Swan Pimpernel, Dusty Miller Undyed and Navy shades to bring some cheer this summer and enjoy the celebrations.
