Cornwall has always been known as a creative hotspot, with a thriving arts and crafts community based around areas like St Ives, Falmouth and Penzance, attracting renowned artisans and makers such as Dame Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson and Launceston resident, Charles Causley. Today, it continues to be a magnet for modern-day creatives, emerging talent, creative thinkers, and entrepreneurial spirits.
The outstanding natural landscape with its dramatic moorlands, breath taking coastline and wide open green spaces attracts visitors from all over the world throughout the year. Our unique surroundings provide us with the daily inspiration to design our locally-themed yarns such as Nearly Home Trees with its colourful palette. Cornwall is rich in folklore and storytelling heritage —from King Arthur to Cornish piskies, and our Samite Silk Blend range with each unique shade named after characters from the Arthurian Legend, which seals our connection to the land.
The environmental beauty of the area is reflected in our sustainable ethos and values. We source our natural fibres as locally as possible to limit our carbon footprint, support ethical supply chains and champion small-scale UK farmers with traceable ‘farm to yarn’ journeys. Agriculture remains a cornerstone of Cornish life, with grazing sheep on rugged hills and distinctive breeds such as Devon & Cornwall Longwool and the Cornish Mule, which we add to our Tamar Lustre.
We launched our Blacker Yarns brand in 2008 as a sister company to our heritage-based spinning mill, The Natural Fibre Company. Our aim was to provide employment for local communities and preserve the countryside’s traditional skills. In 2024, we opened our mill outlet, offering luxury, pure British wool yarns to visiting knitters, crocheters, hand-dyers, and weavers. We also host group tours of the mill on selected dates.
