Yak is a luxurious fibre and so lovely and soft. Its known for its warmth and durability, making it an excellent choice for crafting high-quality textiles. With its exceptional insulating properties and resistance to pilling, this yak yarn provides exceptional comfort and longevity.
The Mongolian yak, also called the Khangai yak, thrives in Mongolia’s tough conditions, boasting shaggy hair ranging from black to white. These yaks serve as crucial assets in the nomadic lifestyle, enduring high altitudes and extreme cold conditions. Beyond economic significance, they hold cultural importance, symbolizing strength and appearing in ceremonies and festivals.
The Yak fibre is sourced directly from the heart of Nomadic landscapes, embodying the spirit of compassion and the artistry of centuries-old traditions.
Each 50g ball of wool has a QR code, found on each label, so you can trace the journey of the yak fibre right back to the nomadic herder families who contributed to it, allowing you to witness the story behind your yarn.
We have two shades and weights available – 57% Yak blended with 43% Hebridean to make a rich dark brown shade and 64% Yak blended with 36% Shetland making a gorgeous chocolatey brown shade. Both these beautiful shades are available in 4-ply and Dk.
The Shetland and Hebridean were both sourced in the UK with the Shetland fleece coming from Glastonbury and the Hebridean fleece from the isle of Coll in Scotland.
