White & Cream

White & Cream

Our customers tell us that colour is one of the most important considerations when buying yarn,so we've gathered together all our yarns in colour groups here. It is easy to shop for all the tones of a single colour by selecting from the menu below.

As we now have more ranges, we're hoping this feature will enable you to browse all the colours in each range without needing to open multiple tabs and squint.  Whether you're looking for that exact shade of purple, or a blue the colour of the seaside, hopefully you'll find what you need.

The colours of each range are subtly different, but almost all can be used together to create garments with interesting textures - just make sure you select all the same weight.

  • Pure Romney Guernsey yarn

The traditional 5-ply Guernsey yarn was named for the Channel Islands but was spun from local wool in coastal areas all around the UK and Northern Europe. It was then knitted into warm working wear for sea-faring and (we have no doubt) farming and mining people.  Also of course we get 'Gansey' and 'Jersey' from the same creative roots.

  • Pure White Ryeland DK knitting yarn

The rare Ryeland sheep are small and chubby and the nearest in appearance to a teddy bear!  They are mainly white with a few also coloured, so we can make white, dark and a blended natural shade.  The wool is medium soft and good for accessories and outer wear.

  • Pure Shetland DK White undyed knitting yarn

Shetland fleece can be the finest of British breed wools and we select the finest we can find, so these yarns are particularly soft.

Shetlands also come in many natural colours and we blend to produce six basic slightly heathered shades in 4-ply and Double Knitting weights. Learn More

  • Blacker Swan natural ivory Pale Maiden 4-ply knitting yarn

Blacker Swan, launched in 2012, is based on a partnership started between Blacker Yarns and Andrez and Ali Short from Swan Inlet Farm on the Falkland Islands.  Andrez and Ali have now retired and their last clip is in production.   They have handed on the flock to Mike and Donna Evans at Spring Point Farm.  Like the Shorts, the Evans will shear these specialist Dohne merino dual purpose sheep, sort and grade the fleeces and send them by ship to the UK, where we turn the fine white fleeces into luxurious worsted spun single flock yarns.

  • Tamar Lustre Blend DK, Gwindra pale undyed

Our beautiful semi-worsted lustre yarn is spun from the fleeces of fine British rare breeds, including Teeswater, Wensleydale and Leicester Longwool.  The natural grey of the Leicester Longwool makes asubtle base shade in silvery mid grey.  To give some body and bulk, we base the lustre fibres on a grounding of 30% Cornish Mule, which also has lustre as well as additional softness.
