Undyed

Undyed

Our customers tell us that colour is one of the most important considerations when buying yarn,so we've gathered together all our yarns in colour groups here. It is easy to shop for all the tones of a single colour by selecting from the menu below.

As we now have more ranges, we're hoping this feature will enable you to browse all the colours in each range without needing to open multiple tabs and squint.  Sheep come in such a wealth of natural shades and we love naturally coloured yarns just as much as dyed ones, so we've gathered together all undyed yarns for those of you who prefer to keep things natural.

The colours of each range are subtly different, but almost all can be used together to create garments with interesting textures - just make sure you select all the same weight.

  • Classic British 2-ply Aran natural Grey yarn

This traditional range is based on a blend of British breeds white wool, combined with 30% Blue-faced Leicester and Mule wool from our selected supplier farms, mainly in the Westcountry.  The white comes mainly from Portland, Southdown and Ryeland sheep and the added Blue-faced Leicester and Mule soften this handle to make comfortable, light and warm garments or will felt well for accessories.  Our Classic British yarns are good for all types of projects and are priced to give value for money and provide an economic alternative to our rarer, special and luxury yarn ranges.

  • St. Kilda Laceweight, Isle of Dùn pale undyed

Our St. Kilda yarn is a unique and rare homage to the Scottish archipelago and World Heritage site on the outer edges of the Hebrides. The islands’ native Boreray and Soay sheep are two of the oldest and rarest of all British breeds, so there is only enough wool to make a limited amount each year.

These fibres are eked out by blending into a Shetland base to create a beautifully delicate and textured yarn with plenty of bounce. Our St. Kilda has a real grip, so it is exquisitely suited to lace knitting and textured shawls.

  • Pure North Ronaldsay Aran Fawn knitting yarn

The small and very hardy North Ronaldsay sheep are banished to the beaches on their native island, so a move to the mainland and grass can be very welcome!  These northern short-tail sheep produce a double coat of mixed fine and coarse hairs which we spin together for a medium soft yarn full of character, which comes in a range of shades from white to dark grey, and occasionally a lovely tan shade.

  • Pure Romney Guernsey Natural light grey yarn

The traditional 5-ply Guernsey yarn was named for the Channel Islands but was spun from local wool in coastal areas all around the UK and Northern Europe. It was then knitted into warm working wear for sea-faring and (we have no doubt) farming and mining people.  Also of course we get 'Gansey' and 'Jersey' from the same creative roots.

  • Pure Shetland with Jacob DK undyed knitting yarn

Shetland fleece can be the finest of British breed wools and we select the finest we can find, so these yarns are particularly soft.  We are just as picky about the Jacob fleeces we use.  While Jacob is not quite as fine and soft as Shetland, it has great bulk, a little lustre in the white wool and a stronger colour.  So blending together makes for a really cosy and unusual yarn, here in a limited edition in DK and 4-ply.

  • Pure Castlemilk Moorit DK knitting yarn

    1 Review(s)

The very rare Castlemilk Moorit sheep was a breed specially created from crossing Manx Loagthan and Shetland sheep to make a small parkland sheep for the Castlemilk estate.  After almost dying out, the remainder of the flock was rescued by Joe Henson and revived at the Cotswold Farm Park.  Their wool is short and brown and makes an amazingly plushy and bulky brown yarn, ideal for outer wear and accessories.
