Shetland

Shetland

Shetland fleece can be the finest of British breed wools and we select the finest we can find, so these yarns are particularly soft.

Shetlands also come in many natural colours and we blend to produce six basic slightly heathered shades in 4-ply and Double Knitting weights. They are normally in 50g balls, unless otherwise described on the Details tab on each individual product page.

The colours range from white, through creams, fawns to mid (moorit) and deep browns and also come in greys (katmogit pale to darker) and almost black.

For the 4-ply, to add to the interest of colour work, we also offer a selection of gorgeous over-dyed shades of blue, plum, olive and turquoise. The colours can be worked together to create traditional Fair-isle patterns or more modern but subtle styles.

For more detailed information on TENSION/GAUGE, please refer to the 4-ply and finer, 5-ply guernsey yarns, Double Knitting, Aran and Chunky pages which give data on needles and swatches.

  • St. Kilda Laceweight, Stac Lee dark undyed

Blacker’s St. Kilda yarn is a unique and rare homage to the Scottish archipelago and World Heritage site on the outer edges of the Hebrides.  The islands’ native Boreray and Soay sheep are two of the oldest and rarest of all British breeds, so there is only enough wool to make a limited amount each year.  These fibres are hand blended together with Shetland to create a beautifully delicate and textured yarn with plenty of bounce.  Our St. Kilda has a real grip, so it is exquisitely suited to lace knitting and textured shawls.
