Back Story

Details

The rare Ryeland sheep are small and chubby and possibly the nearest in appearance to a teddy bear!  They have recovered numbers recently and are now longer as rare as to be endangered.  Ryelands are mainly white with a few also coloured, so we can make white, dark and a blended natural shade.  The wool is medium soft with good length and crimp and the woollen spun yarn is particularly good for accessories and outer wear.

Ryeland is the land where rye has been grown, originally in the Herefordshire and Worcestershire counties of England, and the sheep grazed the stubble after the crop was harvested. The "Lemster" wool from this area around the town of Leominster was famous for its fineness, such that Queen Elizabeth I had her stockings knitted with the yarn and mentioned it in correspondence.
