4-ply

4-ply

These knitting yarns are for finer, softer knits.  With so many, you might wonder where to start!  See the options for choosing, by colour, breed or yarn type in the panel on the left.

Our 4-ply is also suitable for machine knitting.  Normally each 50 gram ball of 4-ply will be around 175 metres (190 yards) long.  As this varies from breed to breed, to be on the safe side you should work on plus or minus 10%.  Please see our advice sheets and download the one about the length of wool in a ball or hank.

TENSION/GAUGE: to be sure of tension, you should always knit a sample tension swatch. Generally the knitter is one variable but the pattern is another, depending on the intentions of the designer!

As a guideline: for our woollen spun 4-ply, on 3mm/US 3, UK 11 needles, you will get 28 sts and 30 rows to a 10cm/4" square, while for less elastic worsted spun yarns you will get around 28 sts but will need to work around 34rows. The WPI is usually 14 in woollen and 18 in worsted spun yarns.

  • Cove 4-ply knitting yarn

So, let’s talk about our beautiful colour palette and its inspiration. Both the Shetland and the Norfolk Horn fleeces provide natural, fawn-grey shades, compared to the rich and creamy tones of the Blue-faced Leicester. Therefore, the yarn base is an overall pale, heathered ivory – or South Cornish sandy, pebbled colour, not dissimilar to the natural Norfolk Horn. Over this we have added a deep gold, more reminiscent of the north Cornish beaches and a glorious sunny day. Next we decided to include a pinkish grey which picks up the pebbles, rocks and cliffs on a warm summer’s sunset. Then naturally the other component of a Cove is the sea itself and we have chosen no less than three sea and sky shades: a pale blue for the almost colourless sky on hot Cornish days and two deeper sea blues, shading from a pale calm turquoise to a deeper stormy teal. We hope that within this special colour palette you will be transported to our stunning Cornish seaside, come rain or shine! Cove shade names are: - Natural base: Beach = Treth - Deep Gold: Dunes = Towan - Pink Grey: Pebble = Kelester - Pale Blue: Sky = Ebron - Teal: = Steren - Pale Turquoise: Wave = Mordon - Deep Teal: Dark Sea = Dulas Mor Importantly, for the yarn specification, we have, as ever, chosen a woollen spun base to add a longer life and more character. We decided to focus on two yarn weights, the ever popular 4-ply plus a lovely bulky version. Each of them will work to the normal, recommended needle size. However, if you give them a little freedom with an extra 0.5mm, they become softer and with more drape. Therefore, we would recommend taking the needle and crochet hook sizes up one or even two levels to get the best from this yarn. Learn More
  • Pure Shetland with Jacob 4-ply undyed knitting yarn

Shetland fleece can be the finest of British breed wools and we select the finest we can find, so these yarns are particularly soft.  We are just as picky about the Jacob fleeces we use.  While Jacob is not quite as fine and soft as Shetland, it has great bulk, a little lustre in the white wool and a stronger colour.  So blending together makes for a really cosy and unusual yarn, here in a limited edition in DK and 4-ply.

  • Blacker Swan Falklands Merino Blend 4-ply knitting yarn

    3 Review(s)

Blacker Swan, launched in 2012, is based on a partnership started between Blacker Yarns and Andrez and Ali Short from Swan Inlet Farm on the Falkland Islands.  Andrez and Ali have now retired and their last clip is in production.   They have handed on the flock to Mike and Donna Evans at Spring Point Farm.  Like the Shorts, the Evans will shear these specialist Dohne merino dual purpose sheep, sort and grade the fleeces and send them by ship to the UK, where we turn the fine white fleeces into luxurious worsted spun single flock yarns.

  • Tamar Lustre Blend 4-ply yarn

    3 Review(s)

Our beautiful semi-worsted lustre yarn is spun from the fleeces of fine British rare breeds, including Teeswater, Wensleydale and Leicester Longwool.  The natural grey of the Leicester Longwool makes asubtle base shade in silvery mid grey.  To give some body and bulk, we base the lustre fibres on a grounding of 30% Cornish Mule, which also has lustre as well as additional softness.

  • Lyonesse 4-ply yarn

    1 Review(s)

This special 50/50 blend of natural linen and soft white Falkland Island Corriedale/Merino wool is worsted spun for a soft, smooth finish.  The wool adds presence and memory to the yarn, while the linen contributes crispness and strength. The combination creates a light yarn with good stitch definition, which will retain its block wonderfully.

  • Mohair Blends 4-ply

Adding mohair to a yarn enhances the effect of dyes, while increasing both durability and softness.  It is well suited to making garments and other accessories. We have chosen Hebridean and Manx wool for our blends to make the most of the contrast with the silky white mohair. Learn More
