If you’re looking for a yarn which is soft to the touch and kind on the skin, our Blacker Swan yarn range is the perfect choice for creating knitted or crocheted garments for the little ones in your life.
Celebrate the arrival of a newborn by making a knitted baby cardigan or baby blanket with that special and personal touch, making something that they may treasure for many years. Wool is such a delicate yet robust material that it is hardwearing with strength to tolerate wear and tear.
The Blacker Swan collection was created in 2012 when a partnership was formed with Swan Inlet Farm on the Falkland Islands. We still use the fine white fleece from their flock of Dohne merino sheep today and have added some Shetland and dark, Blue-faced Leicester to the Pale Maiden, Stone, and Sand bases. The resulting yarn, which has a worsted finish, has a very smooth and luxurious feel, suitable for babywear and children’s clothes as well as blankets for the cot or bed.
Available in 50g balls, Blacker Swan DK and 4-ply comes in a wide range of shades from undyed, natural, and subtle Pale Maiden, Dusty Miller or Sand to the more vibrant Sundew, Balsam Bog and Pimpernel, guaranteed to add a splash of colour to any nursery or playground.
We love Lillerys Cove Blanket pattern by Alice Rose Newton to create a one or two-coloured crocheted blanket using Blacker Swan DK for a pram or an added layer at bedtime. Another favourite of ours is the charming Kippen Cardigan by Kat Goldin which works well with Blacker Swan 4-ply to make a child’s cardigan to wear with a sun dress or casual summer outfit. The Conifer Cardigan by Ella Austin is another hit with us. Again, using Blacker Swan 4-ply the cardigan can be created from the top down in one piece and will work equally well for little girls or boys aged 0-3, 3-6, 6-12 or 12-18 months. Check out some of the other patterns featured on our website by indie designers.
Blacker Swan yarn with its fine handle and soft texture is also a great choice for making hair bands and bows and may also work well knitted up as a bonnet as well as mitts and gloves to keep those little hands snug and warm throughout the year.
