Light aran, aran and chunky
These thicker yarns are good for outdoor use and quicker knitting. The latest to join the range are over-dyed Herdwick in 4 subtle shades and aran Shetland - lovely!
Our range of over 20 yarns includes husky Black Welsh Mountain and Hebridean in deep colours, the mid shades of Manx Loagthan, moorit Shetland and Coloured Ryeland or the paler North Ronaldsay, Galway and white Ryeland and Shetland, which are soft to handle even though the fibre is quite thick.
These yarns will work well for most aran styles: see the options for choosing by colour, breed or yarn style in the panel on the right.
Our limited edition Light Aran weight is versatile and can be used both for a heavier style of double knitting or a lighter style of aran pullovers, taking the pattern and knitting it on the same needles or else adjusting the needle size and pattern to suit. ,
We have more patterns coming soon for these yarns but meanwhile just use our new aran pullover patterns, knit on the needles you use for aran weight normally and you will simply get a larger size!
Meanwhile, you should find the yarns work for most purchased patterns. You can also use them to knit a scarf, shawl or blanket. No pattern is needed – just pick an interesting stitch and repeat to the required width or length.
Or why not try some slipper socks or make a big bag on huge needles and then put it in the washing machine at 60 degrees, and tumble it dry to felt it?
Normally each 50 gram ball of Light Aran or Aran yarn will be around 70 metres (76 yards) long and Chunky will be 55 metres (60 yards) long, but this varies from breed to breed, so to be on the safe side you should work on plus or minus 10%. TENSION/GAUGE: to be sure of tension, you should always knit a sample tension swatch. Generally the knitter is one variable but the pattern is another, depending on the intentions of the designer! As a guideline: for our aran, on 5mm/US 8, UK 6 needles, you will get 18 sts and 22 rows to a 10cm/4" square. The WPI is usually 9 in woollen spun yarns. For Chunky, using 6mm needles, you will get 14 sts and 18 rows to a 10cm/4" square and the WPI will be around 8 for woollen spun yarn.
