Double Knitting yarns

Double Knitting yarns

Double knitting wool is probably our most popular yarn and we now have over 90 in the range, including woollen and worsted as well as over-dyed versions. They are normally in 50g balls, unless otherwise described on the Details tab on each individual product page. We maintain stocks of most breeds but if you do not see what you want, contact us and you can wait until we re-make if it's termporarily out of stock.

DK knits up reasonably quickly without making things too bulky. It suits nearly everyone and can work just as well for kids’ clothes as for men and women. If knitted double, the two strands together will make a good chunky and allow you to mix colours too!

See the options for choosing by breed, colour or yarn style in the panel on the right. Some of the leaner, smoother yarns like alpaca, Wensleydale or the worsted spun Gotland and Jacob/mohair will make finer styles, while a fluffy pure Shetland or Jacob will give slightly thicker results.

If you are thinking about blending colours, it's best to stick to a mix within a breed, as the tension does vary slightly, also with blends, mainly due to differing elasticity. At present we have 3 shades of pure alpaca or 6 shades in pure Shetland and 6 variations of Jacob/mohair blend as well as 6 in pure Jacob, 4 in Gotland, and 2 in North Ronaldsay.

Most of our patterns are in double knitting. For chunkier results some patterns use two strands doubled and you can use a single colour or mix two to make a marl-style result.

Normally each 50 gram ball of Double Knitting yarn will be around 110 metres (119 yards) long, but this varies from breed to breed, so to be on the safe side you should work on plus or minus 10%. See our information sheets and download the one on ball yardages.

TENSION/GAUGE: to be sure of tension, you should always knit a sample tension swatch. Generally the knitter is one variable but the pattern is another, depending on the intentions of the designer! As a guideline: for our woollen spun DK, on 4mm/US 6, UK 8 needles, you will get around 20 sts and 28 rows to a 10cm/4" square. For worsted spun you will get 20 sts but probably only around 25 rows as worsted spun yarns are less elastic. The WPI is usually 11 in woollen and 15 in worsted spun yarns.
